    Introduction
School District #35 (Langley) includes the City of Langley and the Township of Langley located in the central Fraser Valley 45 kilometres southeast of Vancouver, B.C. According to City and Township staff, Langley has a population of approximately 130,000 people. The district extends from the US border, north to the Fraser River and is neighbour to the communities of Surrey to the west and Abbotsford to the east. Total area of the district is 313 square kilometres. The district serves over 18,000 students. Langley has 29 elementary schools including two Fundamental schools, two Fine Arts schools and one school that houses the Montessori Program. Ruth Hodgins and Irene MacKenzie have been Langley’s Reading Recovery Teacher Leaders since September 2007.
    Grade One Population
School District # 35 (Langley) maintains a strong Reading Recovery implementation. District-led initiatives encourage schools to provide adequate coverage based on their Grade 1 populations. This is the first year in the school district’s history that all 29 elementary schools offered Reading Recovery intervention. A few schools have more than one Reading Recovery teacher. Since January 1997, 74 teachers have been trained and approximately 3,010 children have received extra literacy instruction through Reading Recovery.

    Reading Recovery
Reading Recovery is an effective early literacy intervention, designed to dramatically reduce the number of children with reading and writing difficulties in an education system. Reading Recovery identifies at-risk children early and provides a short-term teaching program delivered by a specially trained Reading Recovery teacher. Six-year-old, Grade 1 children who have not responded well to classroom instruction and thus have not developed efficient patterns of learning, can make accelerated progress and be brought to the average achievement level of their classmates within approximately 12-20 weeks of individual instruction.
Reading Recovery was developed in New Zealand by educator and psychologist, Dame Marie Clay. Since 1984, Reading Recovery has also been successfully implemented in: Anguilla, Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Denmark, England, Jersey, Northern Ireland, the United States and Wales.
